Zine Jam is a participatory literacy program for students with additional learning needs and their peers.

Why Zine Jam?

Zine Jam has been designed by a person with lived experience as a student with additional learning needs through hands-on experimentation and rigorous research. The program empowers students with additional learning needs through creativity while developing literacy skills and interpersonal and communication skills that are crucial for workplace success.

How does Zine Jam work?

Who is Zine Jam aimed at?

Zine Jam is primarily aimed at students who are at stages 4 and 5 of the NSW curriculum (years 7-10). While Zine Jam was designed with students with additional needs in mind, all students will benefit from participating in the Zine Jam program.

What resources are required to participate in Zine Jam?

Students will require access to a computer. laptop or iPad with Internet access and access to Canva, an industry-standard online graphic design tool. Canva is free to use, however the vast majority of secondary schools are eligible for Canva for education which allows you to access Canva’s premium features at no cost.

What do I get if I participate in Zine Jam?

You will get a digital copy of the Zine Jam prototype, and a written guide which will assist you and your students to develop your own zines, an introductory lesson plan to assist you in introducing the concept of Zine Jam to your students and an optional PowerPoint presentation to further assist you in introducing the Zine Jam program. You also get access support should you have any questions or issues with the program.

The key to the success of Zine Jam is its flexibility

Zine Jam has been designed with flexibility in mind. Rather than being a strictly prescribed sequence of lessons, Zine Jam is a tool that can be implemented across the curriculum or as an extracurricular activity according to the needs of your school and the students participating. Zines can be created individually, in small groups or as a whole class group. Zines can either be published digitally or printed depending on available resources.
